Of the many things I've come to love about Washington DC, the access to and volume of foreign culture is perhaps the most exciting part. I might not be able to afford to travel as much as I would love to, but I can get a hint of all the different countries through the embassies throughout the city. Accidentally coming across one (or noticing one I've walked past dozens of times) is half the fun. Please join me as I make a point to visit (walking past counts! at least for the first level) every embassy in DC.
From Wikipedia: A permanent diplomatic mission is typically known as an embassy, and the person in charge of the mission is known as an ambassador.
The term "embassy" is often used to refer to the building or compound
housing an ambassador's offices and staff. Technically, however,
"embassy" refers to the diplomatic delegation itself, while the office
building in which they work is known as a chancery.
